“Patience pays. Wait. Let the hand of God work for you. The One who has created you, let Him create all the environments, circumstances, and facilities and faculties. Remember, Creator watches over you and Creation is ready to serve you, if you just be you.” – Yogi Bhajan
This quote is from Yogi Bhajan’s “Patience Pays” Affirmation. I remember the first time I heard it, I couldn’t understand what he was saying besides patience…..wait……be you. It’s a long mantra. But I would hear it again and again in different classes and realized those three words were all I needed to hear for it to strike a chord with me. He said it with so much conviction and truth that I would always leave class thinking about the relationship between being patient and being you.
I’ve never been a very patient person. Growing up, my fuse was was ready to blow anytime I perceived some kind of injustice happening to me or someone else. I was always in a hurry to go somewhere, to do something, and to get instant gratification from anything. I felt my blood begin to boil every time a red light lasted longer than 30 seconds. Maybe it was just teenage angst, but I really had NO concept of patience and thought waiting for anything was a waste of valuable time.
As I dove deeper into my yoga and meditation practice, my perception of time shifted. I realized that fighting against time wasn’t going to make time go by any faster, it actually did the exact opposite. It created tension and anxiety in my body while I impatiently focused on the little hand of the clock move a centimeter each second. I hated that feeling of tension inside of me. I really had to re-learn how to slow down and focus on my breath. I had to experience being me to understand what patience is. Pretty soon I began to enjoy the silence and vastness of just being to be and waiting for nothing.
